Abstract

Africa faces major health challenges, including access to healthcare, financing health systems, and managing infectious diseases. According to the UNDP, many African countries are among the nations with ‘‘low human development’’, characterized by high infant and child mortality rates, life expectancy below 50 years, limited medical coverage, and very low public health expenditures (about 1% of GDP compared to over 7% in developed countries). Africa also hosts ecosystems with health risks, as demonstrated by the Ebola epidemic, and is undergoing a significant epidemiological transition that combines endemic diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, or HIV with diseases more common in developed countries, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, or cancer. Furthermore, the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the fragility of health systems on the African continent. Despite fragile infrastructures and rapid population growth, which exacerbate healthcare demands, holistic solutions that consider African customs and lived experiences, along with efforts in training and prevention, could improve health conditions with international support.
