Representations of Africa in Algerian Philately

Abstract

Due to its geographical belonging to the African continent, Algeria shares a common history which refers, at least, to the after-effects of colonization. Since its independence on July 5, 1962, it used philately by configuring Africa from its first stamp to symbolize its affiliation with different movements aspiring to emancipation and development. The exploration of Algerian philately reflects the principles of unity and cooperation that unite them in celebrating the central values of independence and solidarity. The stamps listed celebrate the Algerian Revolution and demonstrate historical and cultural links with Africa. They mark African-wide events chronicling Pan-Africanism and other activities such as, among others, revolutionary struggles for independence, the values of solidarity with oppressed peoples and intra-African cooperation.
